Budding cells that may be enteroblastic are present. Disarticulate hyphae develop arthroconidia. Tests for urease and diazonium blue B are positive. Sexual morph: Undetermined.  Based on rDNA analysis, the genus is related to members of the Cystofilobasidiales.

Comments:
NOTES: Jones et al. (2015) listed this species under Guehomyces pullulan,s but the genus Tausonia was emended to include the monotypic genus Guehomyces based on rRNA sequence analyses (Boekhout et al. 2011, Fell & Gu-eho-Kellermann 2011, Sampaio 2011, Liu et al. 2015). Tausonia was characterised as basidiocarps absent. Cultures may be pigmented and pinkish. Hyphae disarticulate into arthroconidia. Chlamydospores occasionally produced. Sexual reproduction not observed. Budding cells present. Fermentation absent. Nitrate and nitrite utilised. Major CoQ system CoQ-9. Tausonia (Bab'eva 1998) has nomenclatural priority over Guehomyces (Fell & Scorzetti 2004). The two species are phenotypically similar in producing arthroconidia. The genus currently contains two species and a potentially additional new species (Liu et al. 2015). The role of T. pullulans in marine habitats is queried but it has been isolated many times from seawater.
